Getting married close to end of H1B?

My boyfriend is origonally from Sri Lanka with an H1B status. It ends in October and we are getting married in mid-September. I know we need to submit paperwork after marriage and that it takes time. If we go along with the marriage in September, will he become an illegal once October rolls around or will he be granted an extension while it goes through?
